The ACMP-ICF Joint Task Force

Power at the Intersection of Coaching and Change

About the Task Force

In 2020, a collaborative initiative between the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP) was set into motion. This initiative, named the ACMP/ICF Joint Task Force, emerged from the mutual discussions after the impactful launch of the Human Capital Institute (HCI) study titled "Building a Coaching Culture for Change Management". The team comprises dedicated volunteers, deeply committed to examining the similarities and differences between the two fields.

The Task Force Story

The commencement of the task force's work emphasized the significance and role of coaching within organizational shifts. Notably, engagements like the ACMP’s Global Connect Lab Experience in June 2021 and the ICF’s CONVERGE Lab Experience in October 2021 saw a collaborative exploration of the topic.

During these sessions, attendees delved into the seven critical turning points in the Standard for Change Management. These points were singled out by the task force as critical phases where coaching could play a pivotal role in change efforts.

Key takeaways suggested that incorporating coaches can mitigate potential risks during change by addressing opposition and fast-tracking desired outcomes. As the task force's activities advanced, invaluable insights from both ICF and ACMP affiliates enriched the discussions on the integration of the two fields.

The 2021 ACMP/ICF Joint Task Force webinar series, recognized for its remarkable global engagement, fostered deeper conversations and laid a solid groundwork for future deliberations. In continuation of this endeavor, the task force is sculpting a series of thought leadership initiatives for ICF and ACMP. This series will cover:

  • The advantages of embedding coaching in expansive organizational changes.
  • Distinguishing and relating change management and coaching.
  • Guidelines on when and how to employ coaching during major organizational transitions.
  • A compilation of suggestions tailored for professionals in both coaching and change management sectors.

Expanding the Framework

The task force is continually expanding its thought leadership efforts. They are curating an "Insights" series which encompasses:

  • Tactics to incorporate professional coaching during organizational shifts.
  • Methods through which change management experts can utilize coaching strategies.
  • Elements that the coaching sector can adopt from expert change management techniques.

Both ACMP and ICF are enthusiastic about unveiling this compilation to the global community. Plans are underway for more collaborative events to sustain and grow the lively discussions in progress. Moreover, joint local events by ICF/ACMP and resources for local chapters of both organizations are in the pipeline to bolster grassroots collaboration.
